Module 2: AI Impacts & Responsible AI, BoK II.A
Group and societal harms
Group harm is discrimination against a population subgroup; societal harm is damage to the democratic process and participation. Examples include group discrimination, mass surveillance, echo chambers and lethal AI weapons.
Group harm → discrimination against a population subgroup. Societal harm → damage to the democratic process and participation.
- Group discrimination → systematic unfair treatment of subgroups baked into models.
- Mass surveillance → AI-scaled monitoring of populations.
- Echo chambers → recommendation loops narrowing what people see and believe.
- Lethal AI weapons → autonomous systems with life-and-death targeting decisions.
